Nurses on Nursing: Philippa Marriott and students’ first experience of placement

Our very first episode!

In this episode Bronwyn meets Philippa, who is a practice placement coordinator at the University of Melbourne. When she was doing her Masters degree she became really interested in what her student nurses were experiencing when they went into placement for the very first time.

Philippa used focus groups and interviewed the students before they went on placement and then at the end of the placement. Through her research Philippa discovered what it was like for the students thinking about their first placement, and what the reality was like.

I was on placement, and literally this poor nursing student, I said, I’d stay with you, we’re gonna go and shower this patient together.  And I tried day after day and she didn’t do it. And one day she even ran under my legs out of the shower, terrified that she was gonna have to shower this gent. And it took sort of three of us to block the bathroom to keep her in there. Once she’d done it once, she was fine. But it was that first step.

As a result of her research she was able to make some changes to the preparation student nurses have before placement.

It will help you to know that the titles of nurses differ around the world. In the United Kingdom we have nurse associates who are called Div 2 nurses in Australia. These nurses are educated to diploma level. Nurses who have been educated to degree level and above are known as Div 1 nurses in Australia and in the UK they would be commonly band 5 and 6. Australia also has Associate Nurse Managers (ANUMS) who are deputy sisters, while the NUM is the Nurse Unit Manager who is the senior sister. It will make sense when you listen.
